Q What are drywall finish levels?
They run from Level 0 to Level 5 and describe how much coating and smoothing the wall receives. Level 2 suits a garage, Level 4 covers most living space, and Level 5 adds a full skim coat over the entire surface for the flattest possible result.
Only where the light will expose everything: great rooms with can lighting, walls facing tall windows, long hallways, and anywhere you plan to use a satin or semi-gloss paint. Flat paint in a normally lit bedroom looks fine at Level 4.
Both are sprayed textures. Orange peel leaves a fine, even stipple. Knockdown is sprayed heavier and then flattened with a blade, which gives the wider mottled pattern common in Utah homes built since the nineties.
Yes, and it is one of the things we get asked for most. We sample the match before applying it to the full area, because a texture that is close but not right is more noticeable than no texture at all.
Yes. We scrape, repair the surface underneath, and retexture or take it smooth. Ceilings from before the eighties should be tested for asbestos before anyone starts scraping.

We can, and on smooth Level 5 work we recommend it. Primer is what actually shows whether the wall is flat, so catching a problem at primer is far cheaper than catching it after two coats of finish paint.
