We plan the sheet layout before the first board comes off the stack, running board horizontally where it makes sense to keep the tapered edges working for us and cut down the number of butt joints. Ceilings go up first, then walls tight underneath them, so the wall board carries the ceiling edge instead of the tape doing it alone.

Fastened to Pattern, Not by Feel

Screws go in on spacing, set just below the paper without breaking it, because an overdriven screw has no holding power and a proud one telegraphs through three coats of mud. We fasten to framing at 16 or 24 inches on center, add blocking where a sheet has nothing to land on, and float the corners that need to move so seasonal shrinkage doesn’t crack them open in January.

Q Do you hang drywall as a standalone service, or only with taping?
Both. We hang and finish the whole job when that is what you want, and we also hang board for builders and contractors who have their own tapers lined up.
Half-inch board covers most walls and ceilings. We use five-eighths Type X where fire rating is required, such as garages and shared walls, and it also hangs flatter on ceilings with 24-inch framing.
Horizontally on most residential walls, because it puts the tapered edges where we want them and cuts the number of joints. Vertical makes more sense on some commercial walls and where a full sheet reaches floor to ceiling.
Yes. We hang on wood and metal studs both, and we do our own metal framing on commercial jobs, so the framing and the board answer to the same crew.
Yes. Moisture-resistant board goes in bathrooms, laundry rooms, and basements. Type X fire-rated board goes wherever code calls for it, including garage walls and ceilings under living space.
Yes, and we cut them tight. A sloppy cutout means the trim plate does not cover it and somebody is patching around a light can before the painter arrives.
